Mount Batur sunrise: jeep tour or trekking — which is right for you?
Watching the sun rise over Lake Batur and Mount Agung is a Bali highlight. Compare the 4x4 jeep tours and the classic trek: effort, timing, prices, what to wear and add-ons like breakfast and hot springs.

Mount Batur (1,717 m) is an active volcano inside a huge caldera in Kintamani, north of Ubud. From its slopes you watch the sky turn pink over Lake Batur, with Mount Agung — Bali's highest and most sacred mountain — and, on clear mornings, Lombok's Mount Rinjani on the horizon. There are two ways to get there for sunrise: on foot or by 4x4 jeep.
Option 1: the sunrise trek
- Effort: moderate. About 1.5–2 hours uphill in the dark on loose volcanic gravel, with a licensed local guide and headlamp.
- Who it suits: reasonably fit travellers who want the summit and the feeling of achievement.
- Highlights: summit view, breakfast cooked with volcanic steam, walking past steam vents.
- Book: Mount Batur sunrise trekking.
Option 2: the sunrise jeep tour
- Effort: none — an experienced local driver takes you up the volcanic tracks in an open 4x4 jeep.
- Who it suits: families, older travellers, anyone with knee or back issues on long walks (note: the ride is bumpy, so not recommended during pregnancy or with serious back or neck problems), and photographers who want time at several viewpoints.
- Start: the jeeps leave Toya Bungkah parking at 04:00; with hotel pickup that means around 01:30 from south Bali and around 02:30 from Ubud.
- Group size: maximum 3 guests per jeep, so everyone gets a good seat.

The stops explained
- Sunrise viewpoint — on the slopes of Batur, facing Lake Batur and Mount Agung.
- Black lava fields — dark, solidified lava flows from past eruptions, a lunar landscape that looks incredible in morning light.
- Floating temple — a lakeside temple on the shore of Lake Batur that appears to float when the water is high.
- Hot springs — natural volcanic hot water pools by the lake; perfect after an early start.
What to bring
- A warm jacket — it is around 10–15 °C before sunrise.
- Closed shoes (trekking) or comfortable sneakers (jeep).
- A small amount of cash for snacks and donations.
- Swimwear if you are adding the hot spring.
Good to know
- Sunrise depends on the weather; clouds can hide it, especially in the rainy season (November–March).
- Routes can change if the volcano's alert level changes — we follow official guidance and local association rules.
- Book at least a day ahead; pickup times are confirmed the evening before.
