Kuta, Legian and Seminyak: a local guide to Bali's beach strip
Kuta is where Bali tourism began. From surf lessons and sunsets to Seminyak's beach clubs and Tuban's easy airport access, here is how the strip works and what each area is best for.

The long sandy beach on Bali's west coast, from the airport in Tuban to Seminyak and beyond, is where international tourism on the island began in the 1970s. Our office is in Tuban, a few minutes from the airport, so this is our home turf.
The areas, south to north
Tuban
Next to Ngurah Rai Airport: practical for first and last nights, with shopping malls, family hotels and a calm beach. Watching planes land at sunset is a local hobby.
Kuta
Busy, lively and budget-friendly. Kuta Beach has gentle beach-break waves that are perfect for surf lessons, and many schools rent boards by the hour. Sunsets here are famous. Beachwalk Shopping Center, the Kuta Art Market and Waterbom Bali — one of Asia's best-rated water parks — are all close. See our Waterbom package.
The Bali Bombing Memorial (Monumen Tragedi Kemanusiaan) on Jalan Legian remembers the 202 people killed in the 2002 attack. It is a quiet place for reflection.
Legian
Between Kuta and Seminyak, slightly calmer, with beachfront hotels and wide sand. Good for families who want walking distance to everything.
Seminyak
Boutique shopping, design hotels, restaurants and beach clubs where people gather for sunset. Prices are higher, but quality is too. Petitenget temple, at the north end, is an important sea temple.
Canggu (further north)
Rice fields turned cafés, surf breaks and coworking spaces — popular with digital nomads. Traffic can be intense.
What to do
- Take a surf lesson at Kuta or Legian.
- Watch the sunset with a drink in a beanbag on the beach.
- Eat grilled seafood on Jimbaran Bay, 20 minutes south — try our Jimbaran BBQ seafood dinner.
- Shop for batik, silver and surfwear.
- Join our South Bali city & sunset tour to see the highlights in one afternoon.
Safety and comfort tips
- Swim between the red-and-yellow flags. Rip currents are strong on this coast; lifeguards post warnings.
- Use metered taxis or ride-hailing apps; agree prices in advance with independent drivers.
- Change money only at authorised money changers with a Bank Indonesia licence sign; count your cash before leaving the counter.
- Traffic is heavy from late afternoon; allow extra time to the airport.
- Avoid unlabelled alcohol and arak from unknown sources.
Getting around
Walking works within each area, but the strip is long. A car with driver is the most comfortable way to combine beaches, shopping and dinner, especially with children or luggage.
